Featured Artist: Alexis Nicole (@TheAlexisNicole)

Growing up in the center of all great musical stories – the church in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia –Alexis Nicole may have started her musical career in the same vein as most artists but she won’t end up like most artists. Artists can be made. Legends are born. Singer/songwriter Alexis Nicole is proof of the latter. Her music career and journey are a starting testament to the greatness that is to come.

Among her gifts, Alexis was also a talented athlete. Graduating high school, she was offered scholarships for her basketball skills but choose Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee for music. In 2005, she entered the esteemed university’s Recording Industry Program. One of the largest programs of its kind in the world, it was there that she gained an extensive knowledge of the industry and studied under industry professionals. This would set the foundation for breaking down barriers and creating her own path on both the creative and professional sides of the music business. It was also there that she connected with Donald Wilson and Michael Watson who would later be instrumental in assisting her with taking her career to the next level.

During her time at MTSU, she also met accomplished music producer, Tim Hill who worked with her on her first independent album entitled I’m Here, which was released in 2008. The album created a buzz which served as her official introduction to radio play being featured numerous times on Nashville’s 92.1 FM (92Q). When afforded the opportunity of sharing the stage with Kindred the Family Soul, she was told, “You have the talent; just never stop singing.

Her sophomore album ‘Love’s Last Stand’ was in November of 2009, which included her singles, “Infatuation” & “Keep It in the Pocket”. The album became an instant favorite among industry insiders and helped earn the album two nominations at the 2011 Southern Entertainment Awards, where she captured the award for R&B Album of The Year. In late 2010, Alexis released the single, “Love’s A Game”, an equally loved song that continued to put the industry on alert for this bright, talented, and driven artist.

With her first and second albums, airwaves from Nashville to New York have been graced and she has already received international airplay. At home on the stage, she has toured the across the country, gaining new fans not only in the South, but in every region of the country. An impressive number of sites and blogs have all recognized her for being a unique and raw talent in a competitive industry.

In late 2010 and 2011, in the true fashion of a shrewd businesswoman, Alexis took time off to build her brand as multi-dimensional artist by dedicating her focus to songwriting. It was a smart move that has led her to work with Def Jam’s Khalil, India Arie, Keisha Jackson, Danny Boy, and Rotimi’s single, “Boss”, which is to be featured on television icon Kelsey Grammer’s hit show Boss, on the Starz Network. When building a brand, you have to be working in-front-of and behind-the-scenes. Alexis can shine in both capacities. “I’ve been new to the music industry and working with her has been great. She’s helping me write my music and she just took it to a whole other level,” WNBA’s Angel McCoughtry expressed about the gifted artist. “She has experience; she knows the music industry like the back of her hand. She’s helped me go so far in a short amount of time.”

Vastly becoming a power player, the brilliant singer/songwriter has made an impact on not only new talent, but on respected industry insiders such as critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter Truth Hurts. “I’ve never seen someone so young, so motivated, multitalented and just really ready to take the game by storm.” Demanding respect as a female artist, Alexis’s talent is duly noted by music industry veterans. “She’s about to come take over and show how females need to dominate the game way more than we do and I’m just proud to know her,” Truth revealed about her connection to Alexis. “I’m just inspired by her and I thank God I met her because she actually raised my game like twelve notches as long as I’ve been in the game.”

In late 2011, Alexis returned to the studio to work on her own projects, fully acknowledging the changes and growth she had embraced during her time off. Not only is she musically stronger than she was before, she’s also surpassed her own definition of an artist and business woman. “Juggling between being a full time songwriter and a full time artist has opened up a new sense of creativity for me. It has erased the boundaries I had given myself musically, which ultimately keeps me thinking on another level.” It is that constant movement towards excellence that will keep Alexis aiming at the top of the music industry. Releasing all new music at the top of 2012, listeners have only become to get a glimpse of what this brilliant, dedicated, and bright musician has to offer.

Everyone gets burned. Sometimes so badly that it cripples you; leaves you unable to move past the pain and incapable of seeing beyond the fog. The sting that always lingers can leave you in limbo, lacking vision and wondering where to go next. It can make you forgetful, losing sight of what it was you were trying to accomplish in the first place. Or it can inspire you and provide the exact motivation needed to push you into overdrive. It can propel you forward to that place where you begin to pursue your goal with reckless abandon. This is precisely Winston Warrior’s story.

Atlanta born and truly Southern raised, Winston Warrior painfully lost his virginity to the music industry in the ‘90s. As an original member of the break-out R&B group, Lo’ Profile, Winston’s budding music career was promising and longevity was the plan. They already had two hit singles, “Missing You” and “Play Melody” on radio rotation and garnered much local industry acclaim as one of the hottest male groups in Miami and South Beach. Winston, along with his group-mates, were frequently booked as opening acts for major artists such as Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Dru Hill, Soul 4 Real, and Bone Thugs N Harmony. With packed venues, a growing fanbase, and a successful audition with an influential player in the game, all of the group’s hurdles had been cleared with grace. Success, however, never comes easily and it soon became apparent how crucial a role ulterior motives had played in their achievements and the group split up as the harsh realities of the world were too great for their dream to survive.

While the collaborative dream did not make it to fruition, the ever-present longing for Winston to create and fulfill his artistic goals never dissipated. He was now armed with a business degree from the University of Miami (The U) and had plenty of production and performance experience under his belt to pursue a path in marketing. Although not in the spotlight as before, success in Winston’s corporate endeavors soon followed and he was able to make new as well as retain the strong industry connections he had from his showman days. Hesitant, however, to reemerge as a musician because he had been away from the game for so long, Winston’s insecurities overshadowed his desire to sing. Fortunately, Winston’s support system was instrumental in encouraging him to reconnect with his music.

What began a couple of years ago as Winston’s rebirth has now brought him full circle as he is once again emerges as an R&B artist. This time, however, he is wiser and in complete control of his artistic vision. No longer a teenage singer, Winston is more mature. The sound of his music harkens back to the sounds of one-name legends like Luther, Freddie, Teddy, Barry, Stevie, Michael and Donny. Winston’s music is a fusion of smooth hip hop beats and harmonic R&B themes, coined by him as “Vintage R&B.”

For Lifeology 101, Winston Warrior fashions a relatable storyboard of experiences common to all. While most of the songs’ thematic content revolves around the phases of love, the overarching message of the album is one of progression; maintaining the pursuit of your goals in spite of life’s obstacles. With the creative genius of collaborators and producers, Don Vito and Sean McMillion from Don Vito Productions, Selasi “The African Kid,” Lenny Hamilton, Jr., and Trey “DJ Gman” Thomas, as well as international special guest, SeizVres Palace, Winston Warrior reminisces on his heartbreaks, failures, achievements, and how he found closure and knowledge in every experience to become the man and artist he is today.

An avid fan of soul and R&B, Winston Warrior creates music that embraces the original sounds while honoring the contributions of the genres’ legendary figures. “Bad 4 U,” the album’s debut single epitomizes Winston’s signature style and has already garnered significant internet and satellite radio play. His second single “Keep Movin’” is Lifeology 101’s upbeat anthem, embodying Warrior’s Phoenix Story with its message of perseverance and hope. Pairing warm vocal tones with picturesque narration and vintage synths, Winston Warrior has created a 12 track album that showcases both his strong writing and vocal abilities. Additionally, in similar fashion to today’s most prominent indie artists and learning from lessons passed, Winston Warrior, maintains his artistic vision and takes control of the music, manufacturing, promotion, and art direction of Lifeology 101.

Featured Artist- Gordon Chambers

After amassing an impressive collection of prestigious awards and penning hit songs for some of R&B’s most iconic legends such as Anita Baker, Beyonce, Usher, Brownstone, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Patti Labelle, and The Isley Brothers, esteemed Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Gordon Chambers is on the precipice of yet another exciting milestone in his career as a recording artist with the release of his third solo album, Sincere. Featuring production by The BeatBanggahz (Kenny Lattimore, Trey Songz, J. Holiday); A. Jermaine Mobley (Music Soulchild, Lalah Hathaway, Carl Thomas, Eric Roberson), and Chambers himself—alongside flavorful newcomers Darien Dorsey, Blake Melodius and Mike Severson, Sincere effortlessly melds a pop/ R&B sound with a classic soul aesthetic that is certain to surprise and delight contemporary R&B fans and soul enthusiasts alike.

Recorded in New York City, the album flaunts a fresh, new approach to Chambers’ trademark songwriting style. “I have songs that have come to be known as the traditional Gordon Chambers sound,” he explains. “What I do is a very mature, crafted kind of storytelling with big harmonies. But sometimes that sounds more interesting when it’s juxtaposed with something with a different rhythmic edge.” In direct contrast to his critically acclaimed 2005 debut Introducing Gordon Chambers and its dynamic follow up Love Stories (2007)—which featured the adult contemporary hit duet “To Love Again” with four-time Grammy-nominee Ledisi–lyrically Sincere embodies a more in-depth, up-close and personal tone that captures a rare vulnerable side of Chambers. “Love Stories was a different kind of album in such that it was me being a songwriter reflecting on love and relationships. Sincere is much more honest. I’m a very sincere person and artist. A lot of people feel like a lot of music is focused on the selling of an image rather than what’s in a person’s heart.”

The album is the result of Chambers employing a decidedly democratic approach to the creative process. “I didn’t have a premeditated vision for the album,” he admits. “For me, the process of making this album was more like being a curator: taking the pieces and elements around me to pastiche them together and tell a story.” In sharing the reigns of creative control, the creation of the album proved to be somewhat of a watershed moment for Chambers. “This time, I let the production team take control—especially Darien Dorsey, who produced four songs for me. Even though I was older and more experienced than the producers on this album, they were not so in awe of me that they couldn’t direct the sessions in the right direction.” The result is a melodic 12-track opus with a young, vibrant energy and sound all its own. Coinciding with this change in musical direction, Chambers also witnessed tremendous growth as a songwriter during the creation of Sincere. “Obviously you can’t ignore the new sounds,” he says. “But if you listen closely to the lyrics, you’ll hear that I’m speaking more honestly as a songwriter on this specific album – reflective of my own life – than ever before.”

The string-laden “Moody Love” typifies the ups and downs of a romantic relationship. “It was a therapeutic song for me,” he explains. “It expresses the pain and loneliness that can be found in a relationship where two people love each other but are not getting along. You don’t want to abandon the relationship, but there’s a constant clash of personality that you just can’t ignore. Yet it’s hard to let go.” On “Coming Back,” Chambers speaks to “an honest phase of a relationship where people may be in denial. It’s the point where you feel you’ve lost all your pride, but you just keep coming back in hopes that things will change. Even when you’re mad and frustrated, you just keep coming back. His favorite cut, however, is the provocative first single “I Can’t Love You (If You Don’t Love You).” Why? “Because so many of us are looking for love, when we need to love ourselves better—me included!” The title track, Sincere, written by The Beatbanggahz, however, is a simpler mid-tempo love song. “Men tend to be nonchalant and non-verbal,” he explains. “But women need to be reassured by hearing sincere statements. I’ve been told that part of the effectiveness of my records is that they speak to the women and for the men.”

For the more time-honored fans of Chambers’ ballads, Sincere offers a few gems that gracefully balance the energetic mid- and up tempos. His unplugged rendition of his classic Grammy-nominated anthem “Missing You” (originally recorded by Brandy, Tamia, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan for the 1995 Set It Off soundtrack) is transformed into a tribute to two of his late mentors: R&B legends Phyllis Hyman and Gerald Levert. Chambers decided to include the song after rehearsing the song at a sound check for a recent performance at the Capital Jazz Festival. “I got very emotional, broke down and had to stop,” he admits. “I realized I was missing Phyllis, and how proud she would have been of me. She taught me a lot of things and introduced me to people who changed my life. I also thought of Gerald, who was really like a big brother to me in the industry. I recorded that song as a tribute to both of them, since they always encouraged me not just to write, but sing.” Another live performance inspired Chambers to record the late Donny Hathaway’s classic “A Song for You”. At the behest of the New York City-based Evidence Dance Company, Chambers was commissioned to perform the song in tandem with choreographer Ron Brown. “When I performed the piece with them, my eyes were always closed, so I didn’t realize people were crying it until I opened my eyes to take my bow.” In the studio, Chambers kept his eyes closed and captured the same raw emotion he delivered on stage. As a result, the song includes what is arguably one of Chambers’ most stunning vocal performances to date. “When I recorded it, there was no one else in the studio: just me alone with my emotions. This cover is my tribute to the music I love most: 70’s soul music. There’s no period of music more intimate to me.”

Sincere also finds Chambers reuniting with one of his former duet partners, vocalist Sara Devine, on the Thomas Whitfield gospel standard “Walk With Me, Lord.” Recorded live at a gig and unrehearsed, the spontaneous rendition evokes all the intensity of a Sunday morning praise & worship performance. With all the ingredients at hand, it’s hard to imagine that Chambers’ recipe could lose. “There are many sounds on this album, but I think there’s truly something for everybody on this album,” he says. “A lot of the great artists of our time have taken chances. I took chances sonically this time, because change is inevitable. This is an album that is reflective of where I am in this moment in time. Sincere has something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. This is the chapter I’m writing at this point in my career. And the way it’s sequenced, it takes the listener from the current to the classic. It’s a nice journey. You cook with what’s in the kitchen at the time.”

Featured Artist- Malik

Great music is in the ear of the beholder but all can agree it takes passion, hard work & pure talent to create it. Luckily for Malik, he possesses large amounts of all three. Storming onto the scene last summer with the breakout hit “Crazy” he is determined to make his mark in 2011. “Making music is what I’m meant to do in life. Period”.

Fresh off the release of his 2nd single “Try” and it’s accompanying music video – Malik is gearing up to release his dynamic debut album, Night Before Dawn. The 16-track set is part one of his two-part album and touches on the obstacles one must overcome to reach greater heights. “It’s about the situations we face that force us to stop and think. Learning from those moments make the brighter days so much sweeter” says the promising upstart.

The artist’s latest single is reflective of this powerful theme. It describes the process of falling in love as a figurative jump off a cliff. “The willingness to embrace that risk takes real courage and there’s a lot of beauty in that”, remarked the 18 year-old who wrote & produced “Try” and most of his album. The introspective ballad was preceded with the infectious “Crazy”, a well-crafted blend of feel good pop and club-thumping R&B. Both of the aforementioned singles come with equally striking music videos that add a fourth threat to the young musician’s singer, songwriter, producer status; entertainer. “Being on stage is like 2nd nature to me. When I’m up there, I’m more alive than ever”. It seems his calling was predestined based on how early music became a part of his life.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Malik grew up in a household where listening to music was as common as speaking. His parents shared their love of music with him since before he was born. “My mom always says that whenever someone would play Michael Jackson, I would kick. I would literally start dancing when MJ came on!” So much that Malik was a risk of suffocating when his mother went into labor.

Fortunately he made it into the world safely where he can now share the results of being raised on everything from Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Prince, & James Taylor to TLC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janet Jackson, & Usher. “I learned from a very early age that above all else, songs were about stories being told; how much humanity was in the lyrics.” Having cultivated his own skills as a songwriter, Malik traces his start back to a yard sale he and his mother attended shortly after his 7th birthday. “We went into this one house and I saw this keyboard and I had to have it. So I asked my mom if she could buy it and she said, no (laughs) but that I could use the money my grandma had sent me. So we went to Western Union and the rest is history. I was practicing for 5 or more hours everyday.”

Many years later, those hours of practice are starting to pay off.

With the release of “Night Before Dawn”, Malik will set free a collection of recorded works 4 years in the making. His promising journey continues at the top of May with the release of his most daring single yet, “Take You Away” featuring another talented newcomer, Mark Murrille. Shot on location in New York City, the music video for the single is as electric as the song itself, showcasing the artist leading a quintet of dancers through a fun night out.

“The greatest thing about music is it’s ability to celebrate people and what connects us to one another. To that end, I like to think of my music as a sort of human soundtrack; there’s a song for every moment”. Equipped with inspiring material & focused ambition, Malik is more than ready to share his soundtrack with the world and reap the global stardom that will surely come with it.
